A Day in the Life

Our new co-op facility in Somerset, Ohio is being designed with love and intention and is meant to be a home-away-from-home while you and your family are at co-op. Our space functions as a place of learning for our kids, and a place of refuge and support for our families.

We are so excited to open the doors to our new space in September of 2023!

When you arrive at our co-op you are welcomed into a cozy seating area where the kiddos love to gather to play cards, board games and draw. This space will also serve as one of our classrooms. This is where you will sign-in for the day.

You will pass through a short hall where our restroom is located and enter our second classroom. This classroom will be outfitted with a hand washing sink, a mini fridge and a microwave. Mamas and papas can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee while reading books to our little ones. This space will offer an exploratory play area for our younger kids and serve as a preschool room as well.

Our smaller classroom is in the third room. This space is more intimate and cozy but will still hold 8-10 school age students comfortably. This space will also have access to our outdoor learning area.

Our "school year" is September- May, with December off for family time. We also operate on a reduced frequency schedule in the summer, concentrating more on "experience and field trip" types of activities.

Classes are taught by volunteer co-op parents. We utilize this option to keep our monthly fees as low as possible by not hiring teachers. This also allows our parents a creative outlet to share their passions. Each co-op day will come up with a list of class offerings at the beginning of the year based on what our participating parents are wanting to teach. Each class must approved by the director before being offered. This ensures that the class fits with the mission of Sycamore and is appropriate for all kiddos. Examples of classes taught in previous years include:

  • Night Sky (all about stars and planets)

  • Literary Arts (writing poetry, short stories, and skits)

  • Theatre Arts

  • African Stories

  • Germs!

  • Babbling Brook Tells a Story (class about water and water science)

  • Earth Day Everyday

  • Art

  • Raw Food Cooking

  • STEM through Legos

  • Storybook Art

  • All Around the World (geography)

  • Foreign Language- Spanish and French

  • Mammals of North America

  • Lab Science

  • Karate

As a participating co-op family, each parent will be expected to teach a class at some point in the school year. We also ask that every parent chips in to help with clean-up and general day-to-day flow of the co-op.

This program is open to those who have an oldest child who is 6+ and has notified with their home school district as homeschoolers and have been excused from compulsory attendance. If your oldest child meets these requirements, any younger sibling may attend co-op as well.
